5 Signs Your Garage Door Cable Is About to Snap

Frayed strands, rust spots, and uneven door movement are early warnings. Catch them before the cable lets go and damages your panels.

Most Common Garage Door Issues

Troubleshooting Tips

Door Won't Open

Garage Door Won't Open

Dead remote battery, misaligned safety sensors, a tripped breaker, or a broken torsion spring are the usual culprits. Check the wall button first — if it works, the remote is the issue.

Door Won't Close

Garage Door Won't Close (Reverses Back Up)

Nine times out of ten this is a safety sensor problem — dirty lenses, sun glare, or a knocked-out-of-alignment bracket. Wipe both eyes and confirm the LEDs are solid, not blinking.

Broken Spring

Loud Bang From the Garage — Broken Torsion Spring

If you heard a gunshot-like bang and the door now feels like it weighs a ton, your torsion spring snapped. Do not try to force it open — call a tech, springs are under extreme tension.

Off Track

Garage Door Off Track or Crooked

A door hanging at an angle, jammed in the track, or with rollers popped out of the rails is unsafe to operate. Stop using the opener immediately to avoid panel damage.

Cable Issue

Frayed or Snapped Lift Cable

Rust spots, broken strands, or a door that sits uneven on one side mean a cable is failing. Florida salt air shortens cable life — replace in pairs so tension stays balanced.

Opener Problem

Opener Motor Runs But Door Doesn't Move

The trolley has likely disconnected from the carriage, or a stripped main drive gear is spinning freely. Both are common on 10+ year old LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain units.

Noisy Door

Garage Door Is Noisy, Squeaks, or Grinds

Worn nylon rollers, dry hinges, and loose hardware are the top three causes. A quick lube with garage-door-rated grease (never WD-40) quiets most doors in under 15 minutes.

Remote Issue

Remote or Keypad Stopped Working

Start with a fresh battery, then re-program to the opener's LEARN button. If the wall button still works, it's almost always the remote — not the opener.
